Embracing Sustainability at Clarks Exotica Convention Resort & Spa, Bengaluru

In the dynamic landscape of sustainable hospitality practices, Clarks Exotica has emerged as a trailblazer, making a significant shift from plastic to glass mineral water bottles. Since April 2022, the hotel has progressively transitioned from 1-liter plastic bottles to environmentally conscious 750ml, 500ml, and 375ml glass alternatives. This strategic move not only aligns with the global green wave but also places a strong emphasis on prioritizing the health and well-being of their guests.

The decision to opt for glass over plastic is rooted in a deep concern for guest health, as substantiated by research from Columbia University. Shockingly, a liter of plastic-bottled water may contain up to 240,000 microplastic pieces, posing potential health risks. Clarks Exotica’s proactive stance demonstrates a commitment to providing not only a luxurious stay but also a healthy one.

The transition wasn’t without its challenges. Issues ranging from water quality concerns to vendor recycling practices initially complicated the process. However, the hotel undertook a thorough vetting process, engaging with five potential vendors before settling on one based in Andhra Pradesh. This selected vendor draws water from a natural source – a 140-ft white rock stone, ensuring both purity and sustainability.

While the cost of glass bottles comes at a premium – Rs. 23 per bottle compared to Rs. 8.51 for plastic – Clarks Exotica perceives this as a strategic investment in environmental sustainability. The commitment to eco-friendly practices has already yielded substantial results, with a commendable 14.40 lakh plastic bottles avoided to date.

Reflecting on this transformative journey, Mr. Mahesh Balineni, the Associate Director of Purchase at Clarks Exotica, expressed his satisfaction in achieving a delicate balance between sourcing high-quality water competitively and championing sustainability. For him, this initiative is not merely a move towards eco-friendliness but also a significant accomplishment for the organization.

As Clarks Exotica continues to set new benchmarks in sustainable hospitality, the transition from plastic to glass bottles serves as a compelling testament to its unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and guest well-being. With two financial years of data supporting the initiative’s success, Clarks Exotica stands as a pioneer, navigating the green wave in India’s evolving hospitality landscape.
